Nuclear magnetic resonance spin–spin coupling constants from coupled perturbed density functional theory

چکیده
For the first time, a complete implementation of coupled perturbed density functional theory ~CPDFT! for the calculation of NMR spin–spin coupling constants ~SSCCs! with pure and hybrid DFT is presented. By applying this method to several hydrides, hydrocarbons, and molecules with multiple bonds, the performance of DFT for the calculation of SSCCs is analyzed in dependence of the XC functional used. The importance of electron correlation effects is demonstrated and it is shown that the hybrid functional B3LYP leads to the best accuracy of calculated SSCCs. Also, CPDFT is compared with sum-over-states ~SOS! DFT where it turns out that the former method is superior to the latter because it explicitly considers the dependence of the Kohn–Sham operator on the perturbed orbitals in DFT when calculating SSCCs. The four different coupling mechanisms contributing to the SSCC are discussed in connection with the electronic structure of the molecule. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~00!30431-7#

Decomposition of nuclear magnetic resonance spin-spin coupling constants into active and passive orbital contributions.
The theory of the J-OC-PSP (decomposition of J into orbital contributions using orbital currents and partial spin polarization) method is derived to distinguish between the role of active, passive, and frozen orbitals on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-spin coupling mechanism. Application of J-OC-PSP to the NMR spin-spin coupling constants of ethylene, which are calculated using coupl...
متن کاملOne-electron versus electron-electron interaction contributions to the spin-spin coupling mechanism in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: analysis of basic electronic effects.
For the first time, the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-spin coupling mechanism is decomposed into one-electron and electron-electron interaction contributions to demonstrate that spin-information transport between different orbitals is not exclusively an electron-exchange phenomenon. This is done using coupled perturbed density-functional theory in conjunction with the recently developed...
متن کاملThe performance of hybrid density functional theory for the calculation of indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants in substituted hydrocarbons.
Density functional theory, in particular, with the Becke-3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) hybrid functional, has been shown to be a promising method for the calculation of indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants. However, no systematic investigation has so far been undertaken to evaluate the capability of B3LYP to calculate these coupling constants accurately, taking properly into accoun...

The indirect scalar NMR spin-spin coupling constants across the H-bonds of the protein ubiquitin were calculated, including the Fermi contact, the diamagnetic spin-orbit, the paramagnetic spin-orbit, and the spin dipole term, employing coupled perturbed density functional theory in combination with the B3LYP functional and different basis sets: (9s,5p,1d/5s,1p)[6s,4p,1d/3s,1p] and (11s,7p,2d/5s...
متن کاملTheoretical studies of nuclear magnetic resonance parameters for the proton-exchange pathways in porphyrin and porphycene.
The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters in porphyrin and porphycene have been calculated to investigate their changes during the process of proton exchange, using density-functional theory (DFT) for both the spin-spin coupling constants and the shielding constants. In addition, in calculations on the smaller 1,3-bis(arylimino)isoindoline molecule, we have tested the performance of our c...
